OK, "upstate" is a bit of a misnomer for the region just north of Manhattan that cradles the Hudson River, but the term seems to be in use and widely accepted and here to stay as, let's say, the yellow school bus (which we all know is really more of a 70's marigold kitchen countertop hue than classic golden buttercup). To all of you true northerners out there—please excuse me as I adopt the lingo of the good people of the 5 Burroughs. It's all upstate for us :)
My family and I live in a village along the river in the lower Hudson Valley. We barely make it in, but technically, we're bonafide HV. (Phew.) I marvel—every time—at the drastic change in landscape that happens just a few miles north of us. Somewhere around Croton-on-Hudson, the houses become more scattered and the hills and valleys along the river are oh-so Hudson River School.
I am barely beginning to tiptoe into this region… there is SO much to explore. I'm really hoping—no, I know—that this is THE summer we can take a family hike (with one babe in the Ergo and the other who now walks with as much direction as a 3 year old can muster). In the meantime, while I'm glued to the couch nursing my newborn, I'll do what any dreaming girl would do: keep on keeping on by pinning some of my must-see upstate locales.
