A peek inside: Cycle City by Alison Farrell

August 3, 2022

Cycle City is a transport-focused seek-and-find, minus the SUVs and trucks! For those of you who grew up with Richard Scarry’s illustrated catalogues, you’ll admire Farrell’s world-building and her eco-friendly effort to index every wheeled simple machine known to man (or animal, in this case.). As an unexpected bonus there’s an excessive amount of gelato and an on-the-nose reference to bureaucratic speed — the Mayor is an actual SNAIL. (Thank you to our C-Ville aunties for sharing this beautiful book with us and for the MONDO LLAMA coloring posters featured in the background pics.)

Jane Jacobs was born more than a hundred years ago, yet the ideas she popularized — about cities, people, and creating a more equitable world — remain hugely relevant today. “JANE JACOBS: CHAMPION OF CITIES, CHAMPION OF PEOPLE, the first biography on Jane Jacobs for young readers, paints a vivid picture of a headstrong and principled young girl who committed her life to building cities made for, and by, the people who live in them.
