Kicking off the Journalism Club for Kids

January 4, 2023

In our last issue, Leah (Books Contributor) reviewed BUNHEADS

Thank you so much to Rivertowns + Hudson Lab School families for your interest in the first-ever semester-length after school workshop of the JOURNALISM CLUB FOR KIDS. I am thrilled to share that we will have a full roster of cub reporters and young editors working to bring you the news!

What is the JOURNALISM CLUB FOR KIDS?

In this hands-on class, kids will work with Rebecca to create their own 'zine' (mini-magazine) as well as collaborate to self-publish and distribute a newspaper of the group's creation.

Each child will work through the various steps required to develop the final product but will also have the opportunity to go deep into their specific area(s) of interest, all the while building language arts, creative and strategic thinking skills, and learning important social-emotional skills by collaborating and working through challenges.  And having a lot of fun!

Younger Students

Rebecca welcomes readers and non-readers alike with a focus on story telling through both play and games, ultimately leveraging that into aspects of newspaper production such as how-to's, book reviews, art, even interviews, and more.....

Older Students

Rebecca guides kids in understanding the news: What is news? Is it true? Who gets to write the news?  The students, guided by their own interests, will be assigned beats to cover, brainstorming articles, researching online and/or in the library, reaching out to interview experts, writing, art-making/layout, editing, and finally producing and distributing their newspaper.

Jane Jacobs was born more than a hundred years ago, yet the ideas she popularized β€” about cities, people, and creating a more equitable world β€” remain hugely relevant today. β€œJANE JACOBS: CHAMPION OF CITIES, CHAMPION OF PEOPLE, the first biography on Jane Jacobs for young readers, paints a vivid picture of a headstrong and principled young girl who committed her life to building cities made for, and by, the people who live in them.
