Indie Bookstore Feature: Picture Book in Dobbs Ferry, New York

January 27, 2021

Still pinching myself that we have a local pop-up bookstore in town! If you're looking for your next good read, let Picture Book at HudCo be your starting place. Bookstore owner Sara Davidson Johns’ collection is artfully curated with a selection of beautiful and important books, including titles for young people. Sara adds new selections to the shop almost every week (like the new picture book arrival 🧜🏿‍♀️ OONA 🧜🏿‍♀️ by Kelly DiPucchio.)

Wondering about shopping at Picture Book during the Covid-19 pandemic? Sara filled me in on a few important details:

🌿 Picture Book is open inside HudCo during their co-working hours of Monday-Friday 9am-6pm.
🌿 HudCo staff take your temperature and ask that you use the hand sanitizer provided or wash your hands before browsing.
🌿 Windows are propped open for air flow and there is additional hand sanitizer available at the checkout point.
🌿 Sara is on-site most afternoons and loves to talk books and give recommendations. (There is a self checkout option for days when Sara is not at the shop.)
🌿 The Picture Book website (www.picturebookny.com) lists all the books available for local purchase and you can also select curbside pickup or local delivery within Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, and Irvington.
🌿 If you want to ship further or to shop a larger (nearly infinite!) inventory, you can shop at Bookshop which is linked from the Picture Book website.

Throughout the long winter I'll highlight some of my local and faraway favorite bookshops in this space. Do you have one? What do you love about your browsing experience there? I'd love to hear!

Jane Jacobs was born more than a hundred years ago, yet the ideas she popularized — about cities, people, and creating a more equitable world — remain hugely relevant today. “JANE JACOBS: CHAMPION OF CITIES, CHAMPION OF PEOPLE, the first biography on Jane Jacobs for young readers, paints a vivid picture of a headstrong and principled young girl who committed her life to building cities made for, and by, the people who live in them.
